Windows on the Past

Every building on the High Street has lived more than one life.

Photograph of the High Street, c.1920 (East Riding Archives PO/1/20/43)

Thirty blue history circles sit quietly in selected windows, each one sharing the story of the building it belongs to. Alongside historical notes are photographs that show earlier lives of the street- familiar shapes, different times.

Seen from the pavement, these windows offer small pauses as you walk. A chance to notice what has always been there, and to imagine what has passed through before us.

More stories will be added as the project grows.

Acknowledgements

Windows on the Past project would not have been possible without the foundational work of John Walker and Richard Hudson, whose extensive research and dedication into Bridlington's Old Town across the last 20 years laid the groundwork for this project.

We also thank John Walker for providing his kind permission to use photographs from his private collection.

Click on the blue plaques below to read a short story, memory, or historical fact about the building it sits in.

The properties on High Street were renumbered at the start of the 1900s. In each entry, we have included the property's former number where known, courtesy of research by Richard Hudson.
