INFORMATION ON BENJAMIN FOSSET LOCK

Born 1847, Died 10th August 1922

Benjamin Lock was born in Dorchester and trained as a lawyer. Whilst practising in London he was the Hon. Sec. of the London Positivist Society, which campaigned against the Second Afghan War, and supported Indian Independence. He moved to Bridlington in 1912 to take over as the County Court judge for the East Riding. He lived firstly in Fort Hall (on the site of East Riding Leisure), keen to be near the sea as he loved sailing, but later moving to The Toft, as he appreciated the fine architecture of the Old Town, and where he lived until his death. Judge Lock was an ardent humanitarian and campaigner, writing many pamphlets, including: “Legal Aid for the Poor”: a subject he cared about deeply. If a defendant came before him who had been unable to afford an advocate, Judge Lock ensured the defendant had a fair trial, and often persuaded lawyers to act for free for those unable to pay their fees. After Judge Lock's death, his lifelong friend, the author Thomas Hardy, wrote a poem about the judge: “Nothing Matters Much”.Judge Lock's grave is in the Priory churchyard.
