Every building on the High Street has lived more than one life.

24 HIGH STREET, BRIDLINGTON

Properties on the High Street were renumbered at the start of the 1900s. This property was previously Number 40.

1921 CENSUS
Evelyn Kendall, age 42, lived here with her daughters Evelyn and Kathleen, both in full time education. Evelyn was recently widowed, and had returned to live in her home town of Bridlington. She also had a son, Wellbury, age 12, who was away at school in Westmoreland.

1911 CENSUS
Charles Palmer, age 43, a theatrical manager from Norwich, lived here with his wife Annie, age 41, from Gateshead. They had been married 16 years, had 5 children, four of whom were alive and living with them: Charles, age 15, Dorothea, age 13, Haidee, age 12, all born in Norwich, and Carita, age 1, born in Bridlington. The house comprised of 7 rooms, excluding a bathroom, and Annie was assisted by Laura Buckley, age 26, a mother's help from Halifax.

1901 Census
Charles Gray, age 71, from Bridlington lived here, with his wife Mary, age 72, from Beverley, and his son Alfred, age 38, from Bridlington. They had a general domestic servant, Elisa Shepperdson, age 16, from Kilham. Charles was the Clerk to the Guardians of the Bridlington Poor Law Union, and Alfred was a clerk in the same office. Charles was also the Superintendent Registrar, with Alfred as his deputy.

1891 CENSUS
Charles Gray, age 61, his wife Mary, age 62, and son Alfred, age 28, lived here, with a domestic servant Mary Williamson, age 22 from Bridlington Quay. Charles and Alfred had the same jobs as in 1901.

1881 CENSUS
Charles Gray, age 51, Clerk to the Local Board, lived here with his wife Mary, age 52, son Alfred, age 18, and daughter Mary, age 12.

1871 CENSUS
The house is recorded as uninhabited.

1861 CENSUS
John Holderness, age 42, a bricklayer and stone mason from
Bridlington, lived here with his wife Mary, age 40, from Hull, and their children, who were all born in Bridlington, Mary, age 16, William, age 14, Henry , age 13,? age11, Thomas, age 9, Alice, age 6, Annie, age 4, Kate, age 2, and an as yet unnamed son, age 1 week.
Also living here was their nurse, Sarah Watson, age 42, from
Howden, and a lodger, Thomas Messenger a schoolmaster, age 30, from Cumberland.
