Every building on the High Street has lived more than one life.

34 HIGH STREET, BRIDLINGTON

Properties on the High Street were renumbered at the start of the 1900s. This property was previously Number 35.

1921 CENSUS
George Richardson, farmer, age 52, born in Pocklington, lived here with his wife Annie, age 56, born in Newcastle, and their son Walter, age 24, born in Nunburnholme, assisting with the farm work. Also living here was Agnes Kirby, age 16, a general domestic servant.
There were 11 rooms. Agnes was born in Westgate, grew up in
Queen's Yard, on High Street, in a four room cottage with her
parents and three siblings, worked at 34 High Street, then married Thomas Watson from 10 High Street, and spent most of her life within a half mile radius of her birth place, until she died in 1999.


1911 CENSUS
George Richardson, farmer, age 42, from Pocklington, lived here with his wife Annie, age 46, from Newcastle, their son Walter, age 14, born in Nunburnholme, as was his sister Mary, age 10, but another sister Marjorie, age 8, was born in Nottinghamshire. They were helped by a domestic servant Nellie Bailey, age 20, born in Hunmanby.

1901 CENSUS
Mahala Edmond, widow and farmer, age 87, born in Thwing, lived here with her daughter Sarah, age 59, born in Bridlington, William Edmond, age 69, Mahala’s nephew, the farm manager, born in York, and Albert Hodgson, age 15, a farm servant, born in Bridlington. Mahala died in 1902.

1891 CENSUS
Mahala Edmond, widow and farmer, age 75, born in Thwing, lived here with her daughter Sarah, age 49, from Bridlington, William Edmond, age 60, Mahala’s nephew, from York, working as farm manager, and George Edmond, age 15, farm servant, from Ayton. In the 1892 directory, Mahala was one of the thirteen cowkeepers listed in Bridlington.

1881 CENSUS
Mahala Edmond, widow and farmer, age 69, born in Thwing, lived here with daughter Sarah, age 38, from Bridlington, son George Edmond, age 31, a cabinet maker, also from Bridlington, and nephew William Edmond, age 48, farm manager, born in York.

1871 CENSUS
Mahala Edmonds, age 54, from Thwing, widow, and farmer of 55 acres, employing two labourers, lived here with her daughter Sarah, age 29, from Bridlington, William Edmond, age 42, farm servant, from Hayton, Ann Grice, a boarder, age 15, from Wold Newton, George Tranmer, age 19, from Thwing, a farm servant, and two visitors, Kate Edmonds, age 17, from Hayton, and John Edmonds, age 22, a gardener, also from Hayton.

1861 CENSUS
Mahala Edmonds, age 46, from Thwing, widow and farmer of 50 acres, employing 2 men, lived here with her daughter Sarah, age 19, from Bridlington, her son George, age 13, also from Bridlington, William Edmond, age 28, from Ayton, the farm bailiff, Robert Dickon, age 17, plough boy, from Wold Newton, Mary Bell, age 13, a boarder from Thwing, Hannah Edmond, age 15, from Ayton, and a lodger, Thomas Kirkby Quickfall, age 25, from Lincolnshire, a member of the
Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
Thomas went to America, where he enlisted as a veterinary surgeon in the New Jersey 2nd Cavalry in August 1863, in the middle of the Civil War, but deserted four months later. He then worked as a vet in Canada, before returning to the U.S.A. as a vet in Kentucky in 1871.


1851 CENSUS
George Edmond, age 48, from Sewerby, farmer of 56 acres, lived here with his wife Mahala, age 38, from Thwing, their children Sarah, age 9, Edward, age 7, George, age 3, all from Burlington, Elizabeth Lakes, age 16, a general servant from Thwing, and a lodger, Mary Ann Baruete, age 18, a milliner from Bridlington.
